The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive, evidence-based assessment and treatment for children with the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although clinical care is the primary mission of The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital, the center also serves as a training facility for providers. It engages in innovative research endeavors to promote understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and its impact on families. Training and Research Available to Further Understand ASD

Not only do we offer treatments and training for those going through ASD, but we also use The Autism Center as a training ground for medical professionals and as a place where research can be conducted to understand the disorder further. We try to promote research-based on getting a better understanding of ASD and get families in Louisiana the help they need by discovering the impacts it has at home.

Services Provided at The Autism Center

We provide many different services to help the children and adolescents in New Orleans and beyond once they have been diagnosed with ASD because there are no two cases the same. We understand this is a life-altering diagnosis. We have prepared our staff to help in any way necessary and provide the family with all the information needed while at home in between visits to our Center. Services we offer include:

Parent/Caregiver Group Workshops
  • Primarily focus on using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to improve behavior and teach life skills.
  • One-time workshops on different topics that rotate and are offered weekly
  • Topics include: Learning about ASD, Behavior management, Toilet Training, Teaching Talking, Feeding Challenges, Sleep Problems, Anxiety
  • Parents and caregivers of children with an ASD diagnosis or who are waiting for an evaluation can register to attend
Social Skills Group
  • For children four years and older who are verbal and could benefit from group treatment
  • Designed to target crucial social interaction skills
  • Groups meet once per week for 8-14 weeks (dependent on the child’s age and group)
  • Caregivers of participating children meet concurrently to learn ways to support children with skills.
  • Groups occur on a rotating basis
  • Documentation of ASD diagnosis required
  • Advanced registration is required/Insurance accepted
Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations
  • For children and adolescents 18 months to 21 years of age
  • Provided by licensed Psychologists and postdoctoral fellows under supervision
  • Provider Referral Guide
Short-Term, Focused Family Consultation
  • For parents and caregivers to learn how to support and encourage their child’s development using Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) methods in an outpatient therapy format
  • Sessions occur once per week for 8 to 12 weeks
  • A licensed Psychologist or Postdoctoral Fellow works with the caregiver to determine the focus of treatment, makes recommendations for changes week to week, and monitors progress with the caregiver
  • Consultation may focus on a variety of topics including teaching talking and play skills, managing challenging behavior, working on essential life skills (e.g., toileting, feeding), and decreasing anxiety
  • Documentation of ASD diagnosis required
  • Advanced registration is required/Insurance accepted
